Designed by Jacob E. Bang

The large Primula vase was designed by Holmegaard’s first creative director, Jacob E. Bang. It was originally produced from 1936 to 1938. The vase features optical, mouth-blown glass, which lends it a very beautiful, unusual character. The design of the small Primula vase is based on the original, large Primula vase.

Jacob E. Bang (1899-1965) was Holmegaard’s first designer and started working at the glassworks in the 1920s. He is considered the first industrial designer in Denmark and the originator of functionalism in Danish glass design. It was also Jacob E. Bang who uttered the famous words that formed the basis of the mission of the Holmegaard Glassworks: “Every Dane should be allowed to have a Holmegaard glass.”

Optical Elegance and Retro Décor

Primula is the name of a herbaceous perennial, but the name of the Primula vase contains much more than floral symbolism.  In Latin, ‘primula’ means ‘the first’ and, like his beautiful vase design, Jacob E. Bang was a first mover in so many ways. As Holmegaard’s first creative director, he had a democratic approach to glass design. The glass company’s range should be “beautiful, strong, appropriate and cheap,” so everyone had a chance to buy it. Bang was also a real advocate of the coloured glass, for which Holmegaard is particularly famous. These are two major criteria in today’s interior fashion, making the relaunch of Bang’s democratic, yet subtle Primula design more up to date than ever.

Primula was originally produced from 1936 to 1938, but the architectural lines and striped optical pattern of the the glass is totally on the same wavelength as modern glass trends. As a functionalist, Bang peeled away all ornamentation and excessive frills from the idiom, so even today it comes across as minimalist and brand new. The gently curved design is mouth blown with an advanced linear pattern down the sides, lending the vase an elegant, optical-pattern effect.
